We are thrilled to announce that through our ALWF Community Grants program, and in partnership with the Lions Club of Canberra Valley, we have sponsored a new Story Dog team.

Story Dogs provide valuable support in schools, with their volunteer handlers running weekly one-on-one sessions with students throughout the school year. These sessions are designed to help children develop their reading skills in a comfortable and encouraging environment.

Thanks to this grant, Tricia and her Story Dog, Dude, will make a significant impact at Lyneham Primary School. Together, they will conduct weekly 20-minute one-on-one reading sessions, offering a safe and fun space outside the classroom where children can read at their own pace. The students who participate are selected by their classroom teachers.

“I’d like to extend my thanks to the Australian Lions Wellbeing Foundation and their Community Grants program. It is with their generous support that we have been able to sponsor Tricia and Dude for several years.” Lion David McKenna, The Lions Club of Canberra Valley.

“Pets have a remarkable ability to boost our wellbeing,” said Lion Jarrod, ALWF Director. “The Story Dogs program is an outstanding initiative that not only supports young children in their journey to becoming confident readers but also provides the therapeutic benefits of interacting with a dog. It’s a wonderful way to nurture both their educational growth and emotional well-being.”
