Recently, the Chair of ALWF, PDG David Daniels OAM received an Honorary Lifetime Membership from the Drug Educations Network for his service to the organisation spanning 38 years, a history which is interweaved with the foundation during this time.
In 1985, David, representing the International Association of Lions’ Clubs Tasmania, spearheaded the establishment of DEN by presenting a compelling case to the government for a drug and alcohol awareness center. His vision came to life on September 23, 1986, when the Lions Drug Education Network was officially launched in partnership with the Alcohol and Drug Foundation of Tasmania.
From the outset, David’s leadership set DEN on a path of success. As Chair of the DEN Board for over 25 years, he helped build the organisation from a modest initiative with just 15 months of initial funding into a cornerstone of Tasmania’s health landscape. Today, DEN stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment, thriving for more than 38 years and counting.
The partnership between DEN and the Australian Lions Wellbeing Foundation has been a shining example of Lions’ commitment to community wellbeing. Together, we have championed education and awareness around drug and alcohol issues, fostering healthier, safer communities. David’s leadership has been a cornerstone of this partnership, ensuring its sustainability and far-reaching impact.
David’s contributions have been widely recognised. In 1989, he received the Lions Clubs International President’s Award—one of only nine awarded globally each year—for his exemplary work in drug awareness. Further accolades followed, including the Dr. Harry Jenkins Fellowship Award in 2001 and the prestigious Order of Australia Medal in 2006 for his outstanding service in drug awareness and crime prevention through initiatives like Crime Stoppers.
As David steps back from his leadership role at the DEN and receives an Honorary DEN Lifetime Membership, we are pleased to have David remain as the Chair of ALWF, continuing his legacy of service, innovation, and dedication to inspire future generations of Lions and community leaders.
David, we thank you for your immeasurable contributions to date, and congratulate you on the DEN Lifetime membership. Your vision and passion are a shining example of what Lions can achieve when we come together to serve.
